Why TotalEnergies chose Alfen’s Twin 5 Plus for public charging in Luxembourg

Luxembourg aims to have 49,000 electric vehicles on the road by 2030, supported by an expanding public charging network to match its ambitious energy transition targets. As part of this national effort, TotalEnergies MKG Luxembourg has partnered with Alfen to deliver a new EV charging project across two high-traffic sites in Marnach (Clervaux), offering both fast and ultra-fast charging options.

Alfen supplied its latest Twin 5 Plus public chargers, combined with high-power Alpitronic units, to equip a total of 26 charge points. The collaboration underlines both companies' commitment to making sustainable mobility accessible, reliable and future-ready.

Scalable EV charging for a growing market

In the second half of 2024, TotalEnergies MKG Luxembourg launched this new public charging initiative at two locations: a supermarket and a shopping centre. These sites were strategically selected to offer accessible charging for both private drivers and professional fleets.

Project 1: A supermarket car park in Marnach, Luxembourg

  • 5 Alfen Twin 5 Plus with double sockets (2×22kW)
  • 2 DC 400kW with double sockets
  • 14 charge points in total

Project 2: A shopping centre in Marnach, Luxembourg

  • 4 Alfen Twin 5 with double sockets (2×22kW)
  • 2 DC high power chargers of 400 kW with double sockets
  • 12 charge points in total

By combining Alfen’s flexible AC charging with high-speed DC solutions, TotalEnergies ensures users can charge according to their needs – from a quick top-up to a full recharge.

Trusted partnership and a shared ambition

Alfen and TotalEnergies MKG Luxembourg have worked together for 4 years, with the partnership evolving strategically over time to meet the growing demands of e-mobility.

The Twin 5 Plus was selected for this project as the most advanced public charger in Alfen’s portfolio, delivering full 22kW output per socket – simultaneously – and offering a sleek, branded experience via TotalEnergies’ custom visuals. It also meets the latest AFIR requirements and features a bright LED screen that displays dynamic QR codes, enabling ad-hoc payment for smartphone users. Furthermore, the hardware is prepared for Plug & Charge according to the latest ISO 15118 standard, allowing for seamless and secure authentication between the vehicle and the charger - without using cards or apps.

“This project reflects our ambition to offer premium public charging that’s smart, scalable and future-proof,” said Eugen Pascutoi, Charging Solution Manager, TotalEnergies MKG Luxembourg. “We are proud to contribute to the development of a reliable and user-friendly public charging network that makes e-mobility accessible to everyone, while profiting from a low total cost of ownership.”

Rolling out infrastructure for the future

Installation began in late 2024, with full delivery scheduled for June 2025. In Marnach, 9 Alfen Twin 5 Plus chargers are already operational, and 3 additional projects featuring the same equipment are planned this year – in Oberpallen, Mersch and Bertrange – with the installation of 17 dual Alfen Twin 5 Plus chargers, along with several ultra-fast units at strategic and high-traffic sites across Luxembourg.

All Alfen chargers connect to TotalEnergies’ backend platform, ensuring streamlined monitoring and system integration within their wider energy ecosystem. This project is part of a broader long-term agreement between the two companies, aimed at scaling public charging across the country.
